March/April 2025 (Volume 17, Issue 2)
By Michael Swanger
Our office hasn’t been the same since our beloved rescue dog Jake crossed the rainbow bridge at age 16 on Dec. 27, 2024.
Though we are grateful for the abundant, loving memories of Jake, we are heartbroken and miss his daily presence. He was the best “co-worker” whose few demands included naps, afternoon walks and belly scratches.
We also miss him riding shotgun with us to the post office to mail orders of Iowa History Journal. It was one of his favorite things to do, especially sticking his head outside the car window to enjoy the breeze.
Thanks to those who wrote such kind and comforting comments when we posted the news about Jake on Facebook and Instagram. We appreciate it.
To us, Jake was never a “pet.” He was family. His love and life is a beautiful reminder of the humanity of rescuing dogs that deserve a furever home. Rest in peace, Jake.
